Yes, it's true. Pluto is not a planet any more. and my boys are really upset. They feel sad for Pluto, being demoted like that just because it's not big and special like the other planets, and it doesn't have a tidy orbit. Textbooks will have to be rewritten and even the School House Rock Inter Planet Janet song is out dated. But I've rewritten my own version of Pluto's little part in the song. It goes like this. [sniff]
"Pluto, little Pluto is NOT a planet any more...boo...hoo" [sniff, sniff]
So in honor of Pluto and to all the little guys in the universe and on earth, I say you're special and don't let anyone tell you different! Just because you're not as big as the other guys and you orbit differently doesn't make you less of planet in our eyes.
We will remember you, and our family has a solar system styrofoam project hanging in our school room to prove you were once considered part of the solar system and considered a full fledged planet!

And Pluto's really small. Poor little Pluto. This isn't the first time its been demoted, at least they discussed it before.
We live where Pluto was discovered. It's big news here. Sniff.
I was so sad when I heard this news! I mean, all my life I've thought of Pluto as a planet.

My girls said "That's not fair! Pluto is TOO a planet!!"
Poor Pluto. It's always been my favorite name of a planet too! So sad!
It is sad! My one concrete lesson remembered from 4th grade science is for naught...I am so gald you posted all these cool links, though, because I was going to ask when you mentioned it the other day but didn't want to be the dunce of the class - I hadn't even heard of Pluto's descent into dwarfdom. Til you. Bet you didn't know you were homeschooling a grown woman, did you?
Also - It would be interesting to define how a PERSON goes about dominating the neighborhood around her orbit. He, he. For planets, apparently you just have to be the biggest. Sounds like playground rules or something.
