Then when it comes in I get an email reminder and pick it up. Not only does it save time and money.
This works great for books, too. With four kids I need to get in and out of the library as fast as I can or else they end up tearing up the place. So I order all my books ahead of time online and pick them up in one visit. This has been a great help for me as a homeschooler and the library staff loves it when I get in and out of their quick.
A personal quirk at my library is that they know me by name now and I don't even have to give them my library card. Plus if my books won't renew on line, then they'll do it over the phone for me.
The only draw back are the fines I incurr. I'm working on a system which includes my computer calendar to remind me when my books and videos are due!

The library has so much to offer... People don't realize that these things are there... free of charge. Not counting the late dues that is. :)
I love requesting online and saving time, too. I do have to be careful about videos and DVDs though, because they do have steep fines and shorter rental periods at my library. I don't mind paying a few dollars every now and again for fines--it's way cheaper than buying books and they buy new stuff with it!
My library is just wonderful. I pay $12 a year for movies, you can take out 3 at a time for a week. You can also put movies and books on hold online, renew materials, request books etc. Just wonderful :)
I love our local library! I've used their storytime with our kids and its a great way to prepare them for preschool/kindergarten. Plus -- its FREE!! :)
I have found that searching for books online at the library site can be difficult. If I don't use just the right word, nothing will show up. So... I just open a second window to search and browse on Amazon. When I find something I like, I look up that particular book on the library site. Sometimes they have it and sometimes they don't but I find I get a lot more different options by searching on Amazon first.
I've been using our local library to check out audio books on CDs. Most of the time it's great, but sometimes I get audio books that have scratches on the cds and skip in several places. When that happens, I return them to the library with a sticky note on them letting the library know which disks skip, in the hopes that they'll be replaced at some point.
I've posted a WFMW tip as well. Stop by and take a peek. :)
check out libraryelf.com for help with incurring fines. It has worked wonders for me, but not every library offers it.
