Most ideas for my books come in dreams. Dreaming is like watching a movie for me! I dream in plots and stories some time.
Other ideas I believe God just pops into my head. Not to sound super spiritual, but it’s true. Some of the stuff I come up with is because I wasn’t trying to come up with anything at the time.
Here are a couple of examples of how I have used my dreams and ideas from God in my WIPs.
After attending a romance writer’s meeting a couple of years ago, I asked God to give me a romance idea since romance writing wasn’t something I was particularly interested in, but I wanted to be a part of this writing group. That night I had a dream about a retired football coach, and an idea for a romance was born.
After reading a suspense book, I asked God to give me an idea. It came to me while I was in the car. A simple “what if” idea and Whallah! My current suspense.
While I sat in church one day, a scripture jumped out at me. No, not literally! I wanted to know more about this person in the Bible. So I went home and started writing a Biblical fiction novel.
Months ago I woke with a crazy dream. I wrote it down and it has supernatural suspense written all over it.
My recent idea came while reading a chicklit novel. I woke up at 4:30 am from a dream and couldn’t get back to sleep. I decided to get up and write. I ended up with the first chapter to a momlit novel.
So don’t knock those dreams. They can be inspiration from God or possibly indigestion from the late night pizza you ate. But either way, for me they make great material for my books.

I'd love to read your book about the retired football coach! Amazing where ideas come from. I don't think I've had a viable dream inspiration yet. Mostly mine a disjointed and senseless.
That was a great post. I'm not sure where my ideas come from, but know God directs them.
That was interesting about your praying for a romance story idea...that's what I tend to ALWAYS write! :)
Since discovering blogging a few weeks back, I know I need to slow down this time and get back and finish my romantic novel...only 1 or 2 chapters to go and for me, that is a huge accomplishment, since I usually don't get that far!
Anyway...I'm sorry to ramble. Loved hearing how you get your ideas and how God uses your dreams!

I enjoyed your post and would love to read one of your books sometime. I haven't tackled anything that big yet, but I think it would be a great accomplishment and a lot of fun. I just finished my first carnival post...baby steps!!:)

My dreams are so crazy I never thought about writing them - but I suppose if there's an audience for books about being chased by flying lions, than I'll write it....(some sort of Oz spin-off?)

I wrote about getting ideas for fiction or poetry from dreams. I tend to dream story lines and often get story ideas from them. My current novel is not one of those, but as soon as I get done revising that, I'm going to work on one that's based on a dream I had.

I love to write too. I've written a novel but haven't gotten it published yet. My ideas don't come while I'm dreaming, they actually come while I'm writing. I sit down in front of a blank page and just start writing. I'm always amazed at what comes out. In a way I guess the ideas come from a dream because I feel like I wake up after I finish writing and can't believe what I wrote.

I've woken up during the night following a vivid dream and thought "I need to write that down...it'd make a GREAT story" but never have followed through. Usually I forget. Glad to hear someone does!
